manic-depressive
according to the national institute of mental health ( http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/bipolar.cfm#readNow ), manic-depressive disorder, also known as bipolar disorder, is 'a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function.' aperson with this illness will experience dramatic mood swings--from overly "high" and/or irritable to sad and hopeless, and then back again. most often a manic-depressive person will also feel 'normal' moods in between.
